Watering Saving Tips for Container Gardens

Don’t let the need for frequent watering stop you from including container gardens in your landscape.

Grow plants in large plastic, glazed or other less breathable material to extend the time between watering. Or try self-watering pots with built-in reservoirs you fill with water to provide plants with needed moisture over a longer period of time.

Add a long-lasting sustainable water saving product like wool pellets to your potting mix. This organic product reduces watering frequency by as much as 25%.

Mulch the soil surface in newly planted container gardens to help conserve moisture.

Automate watering with one of the many commercial or DIY container irrigation systems. No matter the strategies selected monitor throughout the season and adjust watering schedule based on weather, number of plants in the pot and size of the plants.

A bit more information:  Add a timer to your container irrigation system to further automate watering. Regularly check to make sure the emitters that deliver the water to each pot remain in place. And adjust the timer as needed to make sure plants receive the proper amount of water when needed.
