The Emerald Green Invader - Dealing with the Emerald Ash Borer
A look down streets in most cities and a walk through the woods will reveal the prevalence of our native ash trees.
These trees are at risk. A small dark metallic green insect, the Emerald Ash borer, has destroyed millions of trees in the U.S. and Canada.
The larval stage of this insect feeds under the bark, eventually causing the trees canopy to thin and dieback. The symptoms may take several years to appear.
A close look at the trunk will reveal the characteristic 1/8" D shaped exit hole in the bark.
So what can you do? Monitor the health of your trees and watch for signs of this pest. Several preventative treatments are now available.
And if you suspect Emerald Ash borer is present contact your local extension service or the nearest Department of Agriculture or Natural Resources.
And most importantly don't transport firewood out of your community.
A bit more information: If you suspect Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), please contact the United States Department of Agriculture APHIS at 1-866-322-4512 in the United States and 1-866-463-6017 in Canada. For more details on EAB, areas of infestation, quarantines and more visit www.emeraldashborer.info.
