4 Ways to Make Sowing Small Seeds Easier

Carrots, lettuce, begonia, and other small seeds can be difficult to plant at the proper spacing.

Mix carrots and radish seeds and sprinkle in a shallow furrow. The radishes will be ready to harvest first, leaving space for the carrots to grow to full size.

Purchase pelletized seeds that are coated, making them larger and easier to handle whether you’re seeding indoors or directly in the garden.

Use seed tapes to make planting at the proper space much easier.  Dig a shallow furrow, lay the seed tape in place and cover with soil. The paper tape will dissolve and the seeds will sprout at the proper spacing.

Make your own from strips of newspaper or paper towels.  Combine about 1 cup of flour or cornstarch with about ¼ cup of water.  Dab this seed-glue on the paper at the proper spacing for the seeds you select.  Place the seeds on the flour glue and allow them to dry before planting.

A bit more information: Make or purchase a hand-held seeder for easier seeding indoors and out. Make your own by attaching a paper chute onto a battery-operated electric razor or similar device. The vibration from the razor separates the seeds as it shakes them down the chute and onto the soil.
