Growing Peas Indoors

Expand your indoor edible garden with sugar snap peas.

You will need a sunny window that receives 8 to 10 hours of bright light. Or supplement lower light locations with artificial lights.

Select shorter varieties that will be easier to train. Patio Pride only grows 9 to 16 inches tall, while Sugar Ann and Little Marvel usually grow to 18 inches.

Plant 2 seeds in each 3-inch pot or several seeds 2 inches apart in a long rectangular container. Once seedlings reach two inches, thin the plantings. Leave one plant in each individual pot and seedlings spaced 4 inches apart in the larger container. Cut the extra sprouts at ground level and use them in salads, sandwiches and stir fries.

Peas are self-fertile, so no bees needed. Harvest pods when they reach the size you prefer.

A bit more information: Avoid damaging the plants by using pruners or snips to harvest pea pods. Make successive plantings every few weeks to keep your meals filled with fresh pea sprouts and pods.
