Celebrate Year of the Hyacinth with its Fragrant Blooms

The National Garden Bureau declared 2021 Year of the Hyacinth. Enjoy their fragrant blooms in spring then mark your calendar to plant some hyacinth bulbs in fall.

Hyacinths were the most popular spring flowering bulb during the 18th century. Dutch growers offered more than 2,000 varieties for sale. Today, you will find fewer than 50 but these still offer lots of beauty and fragrance.

You can find hyacinth flowers from deep indigo to bright magenta, peach, light pinks, purples, pale yellow and white. You’ll enjoy the best floral display the first and second year.  Remove the faded flowers and allow the leaves to naturally dieback. This allows the plants to produce and store energy for a beautiful spring floral display.

Cut a few flowers to bring indoors. These blooms mix nicely with tulips, and other early spring flowers.

A bit more information:  Plant some hyacinth bulbs in the vegetable garden. The soil is usually well-prepared and suitable for these bulbs. And you can cut a few flowers when harvesting early season greens or planting other vegetables.
