Various Types of Corn Celebrated by National Garden Bureau

The National Garden Bureau has recognized one of America’s favorite vegetables by declaring 2020 the Year of Corn.

You’ve probably enjoyed sweet corn fresh from the garden, frozen or canned. It’s the most popular of corn types due to its sweet flavor. Sugary types are the original sweet corn that had to be eaten shortly after harvest for maximum sweetness. Sugar Enhanced types are sweeter with tender kernels and a longer shelf life. Supersweet varieties have an even sweeter flavor that lasts longer after harvest.

Popcorn is bred for its ability to expand when heated. Most of the world’s popcorn is grown in the United States.

Field or Dent corn is grown for livestock. It’s left on the plant to dry. It’s edible but not as tasty as sweet corn.

Grow ornamental corn with colorful, elongated kernels to dry and use in fall decorations.

A bit more information: Corn is pollinated by the wind. The male flowers are known as tassels while the female have silks to receive the pollen and potentially develop into a kernel on the ear of corn.
