Edging Garden Beds

Boost your landscape’s looks and reduce maintenance with the help of a straight edge shovel and a bit of your time.

Make sure your shovel is clean and sharp so it can easily move through the soil.  Use your shovel to create a clean edge around the garden and keep the grass at bay.

Lay a hose or rope around the garden if you need a guide for creating the garden’s edge.  Line the shovel up with the new edge.  Push the shovel straight down through the grass or soil at least 4 inches deep.  Repeat all around the outside of the perimeter of the planting bed. Then move inside the garden.  Position your shovel at a slight downward angle toward the edge you just made.  Fill this V-shaped trench with the same mulch used in your flowerbed.

Edging helps keep the grass out of the planting beds, creates a clean tidy edge, and a mowing strip.  Just run the mower wheel over this mulch filled trench when cutting the grass.  You’ll no longer need to hand trim the grass around your gardens.

A bit more information:  You and your neighbors may want to join forces and rent an edger for the day.  These machines can make large jobs quicker and easier to accomplish. With a shared rental you all save money and no one has to maintain and store another piece of equipment.
