Monardas for the Garden
2021 has been declared the Year of the Monarda by the National Garden Bureau. Join the celebration by planting a few newer Monarda introductions.
Grand™ monarda is from a Canadian breeding program and is exceptionally hardy. It produces a profusion of bright flowers atop mid-sized plants and has very good mildew resistance.
The Sugar Buzz monardas are 20 inches tall with strong stems covered in flowers. You’ll find eight different flower colors in this series. The deep green leaves display an above average resistance to mildew and the plants stay contained in the garden.
Balmy™ monardas have relatively large flowers on compact, 10- to12-inch-tall plants. They have exceptional mildew resistance and deep green foliage.
Don’t overlook older outstanding varieties with good mildew resistance and suited to your garden design.
A bit more information: Marshall’s Delight Monarda received the Award of Merit from Royal Horticultural Society and a 4 and ½ star rating in the Chicago Botanic Garden Monarda Evaluation Trials. Gardenview Scarlet was selected by the Chicago Botanic Garden as an outstanding perennial for the Midwest. It has bright red flowers with fair to good mildew resistance. Petite Delight was the first dwarf Monarda introduction, growing just 12-15 inches tall.
