Starting a Moss Garden
I want to start a moss garden. Where can I get the plants and how do I care for them?
Moss Acres is one of the better known sources for moss. Or you could, with permission, dig a piece of moss from an existing landscape for use in your garden. I have done this for both terrariums and container gardens. Select moss growing in similar conditions to those you are transplanting it to. Simply press the moss pieces into the soil in their new location. Water thoroughly to remove air pockets. One more way to propagate your moss is the blender method. Blend your moss with water or beer, and a thickener like yogurt, clay or black soil or water retaining crystals. Pour onto the soil where you want it to grow. Most mosses prefer shade and moist soils, though there are exceptions. Take your cue from the growing conditions where the moss is collected. Growers will provide needed care instructions when you purchase the moss.
