Moles Leaving Lumps in the Lawn
In a recent column a reader asked you what to do about their lumpy lawn. We have the same problem as your reader and I tried top dressing but the mole-induced lumps reappeared. How do we get rid of the moles that are causing the lumps?
First make sure that moles are the culprit. These critters hibernate in the winter and feed in the summer. Their feeding tunnels can result in ridges in the lawn during the summer. Mole Med, a natural repellent, has had positive results in tests run in Michigan. Check with you local garden center or hardware store for this product. Eliminating the food source, grubs, will eventually get the moles to move to a new feeding location. Unfortunately, you often kill more good insects than grubs. Use this as a last resort.
