Hollow Stems on Rhubarb

Last year my rhubarb was hollow shortly after it came up. Also I would like to separate this plant to make more. What is your advice for dividing and improving the harvest?

Hot dry weather or nutrient deficiencies can result in the growth you described. Try mulching the plants to help keep the roots cool and moist in hot weather. If the weather wasn’t the problem you may want to check the soil. Contact your local Extension service for details on testing your soil. The results will tell you what if any fertilizer is needed. Dig and divide rhubarb in early spring as growth begins. It is best to give the plant a year to get re-established before you start harvesting.
