Growing Brussels Sprouts
I’m attempting to grow some Brussels sprouts this year. I live near Windsor, ON (SW Ontario). Do you have any tips for me?
This is a great vegetable for northern gardeners. It thrives in cool temperatures and the flavor actually improves after a light frost. Try starting them from seed right in the garden. Plant seeds in mid to late May for a fall harvest. You can also grow your own or purchase transplants for the garden. Place transplants in the garden very early in the spring for an early summer harvest or plant in early summer for a fall harvest. Early spring plantings may need protection from late spring frosts. I find it easier and more successful to plant in summer and harvest in fall. The mature plants and sprouts can tolerate a frost. In fact the flavor often improves. Harvest the sprouts from the bottom up. They are ready when the sprouts are firm and about an inch in diameter.
