Amend the Soil Without Damaging Bulbs
I have hundreds of spring-blooming bulbs in my backyard. The soil in our area is sandy and I feel it needs to be amended. How can I do this without digging up all my bulbs?
Whether your soil is sandy or full of clay – the solution is the same. Spread an inch of compost over the surface. Earthworms, ground beetles and other insects will move it through the soil and eventually down to where the bulbs are growing. Mulching the soil with shredded leaves, pine needles or other organic matter will also work. As these materials break down they too will be moved into the soil to improve the growing condition for your bulbs and other plants.
