National Mushroom Day

What can you grow in a dark damp location?  Mushrooms, of course.

October 15th is National Mushroom Day and a good time to consider starting your own indoor mushroom farm.  Locate your planting in a closet, cabinet or other dark spot in the bathroom, kitchen or basement.

Most mushroom kits consist of a cardboard box or perforated plastic bag filled with a growing mix that already contains the mushroom spores.

Keep the growing mix moist, but not soggy wet and the humidity high around the planting for best results.  A humid location, plastic tent and nearby pans of water can help elevate the humidity.  In as little as 10 days you should start seeing signs of life.  Follow label directions for the specific light and harvesting requirements.

And get the best flavor by using your mushrooms as you harvest

A bit more information:  You can store extras in the refrigerator for about a week.  Don’t freeze fresh mushrooms.  Sautee the fresh mushrooms first and then freeze.  These will last up to a month in the freezer.
