Selecting Amaryllis that Will Bloom for Christmas

If you’ve grown amaryllis in the past, you probably had some sprout immediately and flower while others seemed to take weeks before they even showed signs of life.  Selecting the right amaryllis can help you have flowers for Christmas or to enjoy after the holidays.

Amaryllis grown in Brazil, Peru and South Africa typically flower in November or December. These southern-hemisphere grown amaryllis are usually labeled as early or Christmas blooming. These are perfect choices for brightening your indoor holiday décor.

Those grown in Holland typically bloom from January to March. These make great experiential holiday gifts. Or purchase a few for yourself to help keep your green thumb in shape over winter.

Some varieties are grown in both the northern and southern hemispheres, impacting their bloom time. So, read the label to find the amaryllis with the bloom time you desire.

A bit more information: Visit LongfieldGardens.com for a list of early and later blooming Amaryllis varieties. Once the bulbs sprout, you will find some develop flowers more quickly than others. The temperature in your home can also impact bloom time.
