Late Summer and Fall Blooming Sedums

Provide some late season nectar for the bees and butterflies while adding color and texture to your garden with fall blooming sedums.

The wide assortment of drought tolerant sedums makes them an easy choice for most gardeners. Autumn Joy sedum, a long-time favorite, has large flowers that change from green to pink then a rusty red. Autumn Fire is an improved form of Autumn Joy with larger flowers and a longer bloom time.

Matrona sedum’s blue-green leaves on deep maroon stems are topped with flat clusters of pink blooms. Watch for the butterflies gathering for a snack.

Maestro is a sport of Matrona and tends to maintain its upright habit better even in the shade.

Mr. Goodbud is another upright sedum. It’s purple stems and smoky green foliage create the perfect backdrop for the purple-pink flowers.

A bit more information: Sedums are drought tolerant once established. You can find groundcover and upright forms and varieties that bloom earlier in the summer. Best of all, rabbits and deer tend to leave them be.
