Allium senescens ssp. glaucum, Late Summer Fall Blooming Ornamental Onion
Add a twist of beauty to the edge of your garden, rock wall or herb garden with Allium senescens glaucum.
This mid to late summer blooming allium goes by the common names Ornamental onion as well as German or Mountain garlic. The 1-inch diameter flowers are lavender or mauve and stand above the foliage. The gray green leaves stand about 6” tall and have a slight twist, adding to its beauty. It is evergreen in milder regions.
Hardy in zones 4 to 8 it grows best in full sun or partially shaded locations. It’s very adaptable and drought tolerant once established. Deer tend to leave it be and it tolerates growing near black walnut trees.
Like other alliums, it is grown from bulbs but the plant can be divided in early spring or fall. Or separate the individual bulbs to start new plants.
