When to Prune Clematis
Should I have cut my clematis back in the fall, prune it now or in the spring or just leave it alone?
Prune clematis to control the size and encourage new growth at the base of the plants. Established clematis plants are usually pruned yearly for this reason. Clematis that bloom in early spring should be pruned after flowering. Those that bloom in summer or fall can be pruned during the dormant season, fall until growth begins in spring. I prefer to prune these clematis in late winter just before growth begins. The standing clematis can add winter interest, shelter for birds, while increasing the plants ability to survive harsh winter weather. Plus by late winter many of us are anxious to get into my yard and start working.
