Using Salt to Control Weeds in Asparagus Patch

I heard you can use salt to control the weeds in an asparagus patch. Is this true? And if so how much and when should it be applied?

Salt was an old remedy that is not recommended. The idea was the salt would kill the shallow rooted weeds and not harm the more deeply rooted asparagus. Research has found regular applications of salt to the soil for weed control can weaken the asparagus plants and reduce yields. I recommend pulling, cultivation, mulching and weedkillers tested and recommended for this situation.
