Transplanting Rose of Sharon in Summer
I want to move my Althea (Hibiscus syriacus) to a different location. Is it safe to transplant it in midsummer?
Transplanting shrubs during the often hot dry months of summer is stressful on them and you. If you have no other choice, go ahead and move it. Mulch the soil with shredded bark or woodchips to help keep the roots cool and moist during the hot summer weather. Water thoroughly whenever the top few inches are crumbly and moist. And be sure to wait a year to fertilize. You do not want to damage the roots with high nitrogen fertilizer as the plant re-establishes itself during the hot summer weather. If possible wait until early spring before growth begins. The cooler often moister weather makes it easier to re-establish the plants. Plus your shrub will have all summer to root and recover before winter arrives.
