Stem Cuttings Project
Start new plants using pieces cut from your favorite plant!
Here's what you'll need:
- Your favorite plant
- Potting Mix
- Rooting compound (*optional - helpful for hard to root plants)
- Small container
- Water
Here's how to do it:
- Fill small container with potting mix
- Use sharp scissors to cut 4 to 6" pieces of stem - make cut above a healthy leaf
- Remove the lowest set of leaves from your stem cutting
- Dip the end of the stem in rooting compound*
- Tap off extra rooting compound*
- Stick your finger in the potting mix to make a pocket for your cutting
- Place cutting in the hole you just made and firm the soil around the stem
- Water just enough to moisten soil, and again only when the potting mix starts to dry. (Keep the soil moist, but not wet).
- Set container in open plastic bag for added humidity
- Keep in a bright location out of direct sun
Ready to Grow
- Roots should form in 1 to 2 weeks
- Move plant to a sunny location and water as needed
