Seedless Watermelon
My family and I are trying to figure out how seedless watermelons are produced. If the fruit does not produce seeds, how do they start the next generation of plants?
It's about percentages. Seedless watermelons are complex hybrids that are able to form fruit even though most of the seeds fail to mature. Hybridizers and seed producers harvest the small percent of viable seeds to use for future plantings. This is why the seedless watermelons, seeds for planting and fruit for eating, tend to be more expensive than their seedy counterparts.
