Putting Newspaper in the Compost Pile

Is it safe to use newspaper in the compost pile?

Most dyes now used in printing are safe for the garden and compost.  Shred the paper, just as you do plant debris, before adding it to the compost pile.  This will speed decomposition resulting in finished compost sooner.  Or use several layers of newspaper as mulch in the garden.  Cover it with leaves, grass clippings or other organic material.  This will hold the newspaper in place and improve the appearance in the garden.
