Pruning Potentilla, Forsythia & Spirea

When is the best time to prune potentilla, forsythia and spirea?

Spring flowering plants like forsythia, lilac and bridal wreath spirea should be pruned right after flowering. This way you can enjoy the beautiful flowers before reducing their size. Summer blooming plants like potentilla, white hydrangea, and the pink to purple summer blooming spireas can be pruned back in late winter or early spring.
