Pruning Currant Plants

My currant bushes have been producing well for several years.  The plants are getting large and outgrowing their location.  How and when can I prune them to control their size but still have a large harvest?

Currants produce fruit on growth from old wood.  The goal is to maintain a plant with 4 to 6 of each 1, 2 and 3 year old stems.  Start by pruning out damaged, broken and 4 year or older stems.  I prefer to prune in late winter.  The plants recover quickly and I can take care of winter damage while doing regular yearly pruning.  Prune each year to maintain the plant's size, health and productivity.
