Problem with Buckthorn
We have columnar buckthorn planted along our property line. These shrubs have been dying over the last few years. The leaves curl and dry.
Columnar buckthorns are susceptible to a fungal canker. It gets started after buckthorns are injured by cold winter temperatures. Check the drying stems for cankers. They appear as sunken and discolored areas on the stem. Prune out damaged stems below the canker. Disinfect tools with alcohol or a one part bleach and 9 parts water solution. You may want to take this opportunity to replace these plants. Columnar buckthorn has been found invading our natural areas. Consider replacing these sick plants with healthy, noninvasive plants.
