How Often to Prune

How often do I need to prune?

Unfortunately there is no set schedule. Climate, growing conditions, maintenance practices and the plant variety determine rate of growth and need for pruning. Remove diseased, insect infested or damaged branches as soon as they are found. Wait a year or two after planting to start training and shaping the plants. Once established, prune shrubs as needed to maintain size, encourage new pest resistant growth and improve bark color, flowering and fruiting. Sheared shrubs will need to be pruned one or more times a season to maintain their formal appearance.
