Hardening Off Transplants Before Planting
I read in a garden book that I should harden off transplants before planting them outdoors in their permanent location. How do I do that?
The hardening off process helps plants make the transition from growing indoors in a greenhouse or under lights to the tougher conditions of the outdoors. Start the process about two weeks prior to planting outdoors. Stop fertilizing the plants and water less frequently. Move the plants outdoors in a shaded location. Each day increase the amount of direct sun that the plants receive. Be sure to cover or move the plants indoors whenever there is a danger of frost. The extra effort will prevent damage and reduce stress caused by the major change in location and growing conditions.
