Growing Zoysia Grass in the North
We received in the mail, an advertisement for AMAZOY Zoysia Grass. It sounds too good to be true so I question it. Is this a grass that would thrive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin?
Zoysia is a warm weather grass that is not suited to Wisconsin and other Great Lakes and Midwest states. Several southeastern Wisconsin gardeners are growing zoysia lawns in our cold northern climate. The problem with this low maintenance grass is the short season of green. Zoysia lawns are only green during the warm months of summer. During the 8-9 months of fall, winter and spring the lawn stays dormant and brown. This tough grass is also difficult to eliminate once it is established. I would recommend staying with the traditional bluegrass, fescue and perennial ryegrass mixes. These cool weather grasses are hardy and green almost continually from spring through fall.
