Growing Tomatoes Near a Black Walnut Tree

I have been told that Black Walnut trees and roots cannot be grown with tomato plants. Is this true?

Yes it is. All parts of the black walnut contain juglone. This is toxic to many plants including tomatoes. Many gardeners, like you, struggle with growing gardens near theirs or their neighbor’s black walnut tree. Try growing your tomatoes at least 50 feet from the tree where the juglone concentration is greatest. Or consider container gardens or a raised bed garden lined with weed barrier to keep the black walnut roots out of the soil.
