Grass Seed for Sandy Soil
We have a property in northern Wisconsin. Because of our sandy soil, we have a hard time with being successful with our lawn. My husband added a layer of brown dirt to the soil and planted grass seed. It did take somewhat but it is not thick. I continue planting more seed in the bare areas. We do water consistently. What type of grass seed would you recommend for our type of soil?
Look for a grass seed with a high percent of fescue. These are often sold as park, roadway or play mixes. Turf type tall fescues are hardy and drought tolerant and should perform well in your situation. A relatively new rhizomatous tall fescue (rtf) is gaining popularity. It has the same attributes of the tall fescue plus it spreads like bluegrass instead of forming clumps like standard tall fescue. It is available at many garden centers and hardware stores. One of the more readily available brands is Water Saver.
