Composting Sod

I just dug up a portion of my lawn to create a flowerbed.  Can I compost the sod?

Many gardeners recycle pieces of sod in other parts of the landscape.  They use it to replace thin or bare areas of lawn.  If it isn't needed or the pieces are too small, composting is a great alternative.  Lay the sod, soil and root side up, in the compost pile.  Layering the sod pieces creates a nice mix of soil and grass for quick composting.  Keep the pile moist but not wet to speed decomposition.  Be patient, it can take one or more seasons for a large pile of sod to decompose.
