Caring for Weeping Pussy Willow
I planted a weeping pussy willow 1 ½ years ago. It is spreading on the ground instead of growing up. Should I trim it back or transplant it?
Weeping plants will sprawl on the ground like yours unless they are grafted on straight stems or trained to form small weeping trees. Some gardeners prefer the sprawling habit and use them as groundcovers in the garden. Consider adding a small tree or other upright plant for some vertical interest and enjoy your weeping pussy willow groundcover. Or train the plant into a small tree. Tie the main stem onto a stake. Continue securing it to the stake and removing lower branches until it reaches the desired height. Then allow the plant to develop a weeping crown. Otherwise replace your existing plant with a tree-form weeping pussy willow that has been grafted onto a straight stem and trained into a small weeping pussy willow tree.
