Amending Granite Soil
I can't seem to grow anything in our decomposed granite soil. I've enhanced it with topsoil and water frequently, but even wildflowers refuse to sprout.
Try adding compost. You can make your own or purchase it at the garden center. Add several inches to the top 6 to 12 inches of garden soil. The compost adds organic matter to improve drainage, increase water holding capacity and improve the structure of the soil. You will see some improvement the first season, but it takes years to build good garden soil. If you don't have the patience or time to wait, you may want to create raised beds over the existing soil. Use plastic lumber or stone to create a raised garden. Fill it with 6 to 12 inches of quality topsoil. And voila, an instant garden.
