  • Transplant balled and burlap if root pruned
  • Adaptable to most soil types and pH as long as they are well-drained
  • Moderately drought tolerant
  • Plant near patio or deck where bark can be seen and appreciated
  • Weak crotches and multi-trunk habit causes limb breakage and trunk splitting in heavy snow and ice
  • Showy, mottled bark after first 10 to 15 years of growth
  • Can be expensive and difficult to locate

Cankers, needle blights, scale, webworm, spittlebug, shoot borer
Varieties
  • Silver Ghost - mottled bark has silvery-gray tones
  • Temple Gem - compact, slow growing cultivar
  • Compacta - growth rate half the species, dense form
