Still Time to Plant Vegetables Late Additions to the Garden

Don't let the calendar stop you from gardening. There is still time to plant vegetables for you and your family to enjoy.

Fill in those empty spaces or replant rows that have already been harvested. Select short season crops like carrots, beets and beans that will reach maturity and can be harvested before the first killing frost.

Second plantings can be started from plants or seeds. Check the tag or seed packet to find out how many days that particular plant needs to grow and produce. Add a few weeks for harvesting and see if you have enough time left in the growing season.

Keep in mind you can always add a bit of frost protection and some vegetables like cabbage, collards, spinach and lettuce will even tolerate a light frost giving you a longer harvest season.

And if space is a premium try growing a few late season vegetables in pots.

A bit more information: Fill your late season garden with lots of variety. Include root crops like beets, carrots, radishes, and turnips. Greens like leaf lettuce, spinach, collards, kale, and chard provide the basis for a great fall salad. And try onions, kohlrabi, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and sweet corn for some variety. Just make sure the seeds or transplants will have enough time to grow and produce.
