The Fall Garden

The fall garden is a grand finale of landscaping for many gardeners and their plants.

Most ornamental grasses hit their peak in fall. This dwarf zebra grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Little Zebra') provides a nice focal point at the edge of this bed.

While Shenandoah switchgrass (Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah') provides a vertical accent in a container of ornamental kale and sweet potato vine.

And the aggressive blue lyme grass (Elymus) is kept in check by growing it in its own pot sunk into the ground or into a larger planter combined with annuals.

The giant blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) is just past its peak, but still provides waves of blue throughout the garden bed.

The North American native Helenium, is covered with blooms from late summer through frost. And leave a few seedheads for fall and winter interest. These black seedpods contrast nicely against the blue green leaves of Baptisia.

A bit more information: And dont forget to include some perennials with fall color. Sedum kamchatikum has beautiful orange fall color while the leaves of hosta, Amsonia, and balloon flower (Platycodon) glow golden. And add a bit of purple with the fall foliage of peonies and evening primrose (Oenothera).
