Each year the Pantone Color Institute selects a color or two that reflect the spirit of the times.  These colors we will see in home furnishings, advertisements and even our landscapes. The 2021 Pantone Colors are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, a bright and cheerful yellow.

Include these colors in the garden to convey a message of strength and hopefulness.  Or use it as an excuse to add more plants to the landscape.

Yellow daffodils and tulips are an easy choice for the spring garden and bouquets.  Consider adding more yellow to the garden with dahlias, peonies, daylilies, roses, yellow coneflowers and of course sunflowers.

Many foliage plants like dusty miller, santolina, and lamb’s ear have gray or silver leaves. These are neutral colors that combine nicely with cool and warm colors, including illuminating yellow.

A bit more information: Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone shared these thoughts on the 2021 color choices in a press release. “Practical and rock solid, but at the same time warming and optimistic, this color combination gives us resilience and hope.”
