Take a walk around your neighborhood or hike through a nearby park or public garden to burn some calories and gather ideas for your winter landscape.

Notice the plants that grab your attention. Evergreens, of course, but I bet you’ll start noticing trees and shrubs with colorful bark, unique form or persistent fruit and seedpods.

Take a few pictures of the plant and the overall landscape. This will be helpful when trying to identify the plant and may inspire ways to incorporate it into your landscape.

Don’t be afraid to ask the homeowner about their plants.  Most gardeners are proud of their gardens and like to share. Look for labels on the plants or maps that identify the trees and shrubs at parks and public gardens

As always make sure the plants you select will fit the space and thrive in your yard’s growing conditions.

A bit more information:  Including bird-friendly plants helps add motion and color to the winter landscape. You’ll enjoy watching them feast on the fruit and seeds or huddle in the shelter of your evergreens.
