You may have noticed a relatively newcomer to the Christmas tree lot. The soft blue-green needles of concolor also called white fir make it a stand out among the other trees. Consider using this fir as your fresh cut holiday tree or landscape plant.
The concolor fir’s small narrow needles, shape and aroma as well as good needle retention make it an excellent Christmas tree.
In the landscape it is much more tolerant of heat, drought and cold than most other firs. It grows best in full sun with deep rich well-drained soils but will tolerate light shade.
The white fir is native to the western United States from Colorado to southern California and Northern Mexico.
It has a similar shape and color to the blue spruce, but its softer texture and lack of serious pests make it a great alternative to that popular spruce.
A bit more information: Don’t let a lack of space stop you from growing this beauty in your landscape. ‘Compacta’ has an irregular shape and only grows 6 to 7 feet tall and wide. ‘Dwarf Globe’ is 3’ high with closely spaced bluish green needles. Silver blue needles on the 10’ tall ‘My Blue Heaven’ make this compact variety a standout in the landscape.
