Hummingbirds are on the move, starting their migration to warmer climates. Help them fuel up for their long journey.

You may have noticed more hummingbird activity at your feeders and flowers. These winged beauties are eating more to increase their body weight in preparation for their arduous journey south.

Consider adding some late blooming annuals and perennials to your garden. Many garden centers sell flowering plants for the late summer and fall garden. Use these to create an attractive container or fill voids in your planting beds.

Add one or more feeders to your landscape. Provide space between the feeders as hummingbirds are territorial. Make sure there is cover within 10 to 15 feet. Fill with a 1-part sugar to 4-parts water solution. Replace the mixture and clean the feeders every few days. This provides additional food for the hummingbirds and viewing opportunities for you.

A bit more information: Include some water and a few of their favorite fall blooming perennials like bee balm, liatris and anise hyssop. Add a few of their preferred annuals like Mexican sunflower, cleome, cuphea, salvia and petunias.
