June is considered strawberry month since many of us are now picking and enjoying this tasty low-calorie fruit. Consider adding a few plants to your garden or containers this season.

You have several types to choose from. June-bearing strawberries produce one crop of berries in late spring to early summer, depending on where you garden.  Plant now and enjoy an abundant harvest next year.

Everbearing strawberries produce two crops of berries each year. You’ll enjoy fresh strawberries early and late in the season, while day-neutral plants produce berries throughout the growing season.

Remove any flowers that form on new plantings of June-bearing strawberries and those that form on day-neutral and everbearing for the first six to eight weeks after planting. This focuses the plant’s energy on establishing a strong root system.

A bit more information:  Dress up the landscape with a groundcover of sweet alpine strawberries.  They’re a perfect bite size snack. And no matter which type of strawberry you select, match the variety to your region’s climate and properly prepare the soil before planting.
