With so many hosta varieties in the garden center and catalogues it’s difficult to choose the right ones for your garden.
The American Hosta Growers Association stepped in to help by naming one outstanding variety Hosta of the Year each year since 1996. Association members select a hosta that is adaptable to all regions of the country, is widely available and retails for around $15.
World Cup is the 2018 Hosta of the Year. It grows about 30 inches high and 40 inches wide. The glowing gold leaves are deeply cupped and corrugated. The leaves stand upright facing the center and showing off the white undersides of the leaves.
Pale purple flowers appear in summer. Watch for hummingbirds nectaring on the blossoms.
Grow World Cup Hosta in partial to full shade. Keep soil moist throughout the growing season.
A bit more information: Extend your enjoyment throughout the year. Allow seeds to develop and leave them on the plants. Then watch for the juncos to stop by and dine.
