- Plant hardened-off transplants in the garden after the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed
- Space plants 9 to 12 inches apart
- Apply a slow release fertilizer at planting
- Water new plants enough to keep the sorrounding soil moist, once established, water thoroughly and only when the top few inches of soil are crumbling and starting to dry
- Taller varieties can be cut back mid-season to promote fuller growth
