Eco-friendly Mosquito Control
Don't let mosquitoes prevent you from enjoying your garden this summer. A fan and a bit of outdoor housekeeping will help you manage these pests.
Start by eliminating standing water in the yard. Buckets, old tires and clogged gutters and downspouts that hold water make the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Clear the gutters, empty stagnant water and store items upside down or in the garage.
Change the water in birdbaths once a week and keep the water in ponds and pools moving. Or use B.t.i. (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) to kill any mosquito larvae that do hatch. These eco-friendly products will not harm birds, fish, pets or children that may drink or play in the water.
Add a bit more protection while gardening and sitting or eating outdoors. Your neighbors may think you are crazy but use a fan to create a gentle breeze that keeps the weak flying mosquitoes away from you and your guests.
A bit more information: Let nature lend a hand. Bats and birds consume mosquitoes as part of their diets. Avoid using pesticides, install nesting boxes and create a backyard wildlife friendly landscape to invite these mosquito predators into your backyard.
