Attracting Hummingbirds to the Garden
Bring in the hummingbirds and brighten your landscape with colorful plants.
Hedges of Weigela provide shelter for birds and the funnelform flowers are filled with nectar for both hummingbirds and butterflies to enjoy.
A honeysuckle vine (Lonicera sempervirens) climbs on a trellis and surrounds this rustic birdhouse. The season long flowers of this honeysuckle will help attract hummingbirds to the yard.
The versatile daylily (Hemerocallis) provides colorful blooms and nectar for the hummingbirds in both sun and shade.
Bee balm (Monarda didyma) adds color to the summer garden with its flowers and hummingbird appeal. Look for powdery mildew resistant varieties or plant them amongst other tall plants to hide any discolored foliage that may occur.
This trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) is about to burst into bloom. Here the vigorous grower is being trained into a small tree while just around the corner another one climbs over a homemade trellis and is partnered with clematis.
A bit more information: Add Fuchsia to shady locations for a bit of color and hummingbird appeal. Include perennial and annual Salvias, as well as Cuphea (cigar plant and tiny mice) to container and in-ground gardens. These plants perform best in full and part sun locations with moist well-drained soils.
