Edibles in Your Flower Gardens

A vegetable garden at the outskirts of the landscape is a productive way to grow herbs and vegetables.

But limited space or a more decorative approach may have you looking for an alternative.

Look for creative ways to include these plants in the garden. The fine texture of dill combines nicely with the surrounding ornamentals like this canna. And it reseeds from year to year, weaving its way through the garden.

Thyme makes a nice edible groundcover and edger while lavender blends nicely with annuals and perennials and helps attract pollinators and other beneficial insects.

Tuck tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, especially those with colorful fruit, into mixed borders. These metal supports will soon be masked by the maturing vegetables and surrounding flowers. Or use colorful supports to save space and add color to the garden.

A bit more information: And dont forget to add a few perennial vegetables and fruits to the landscape. Rhubarb bold foliage and asparagus fine ferny growth make great backdrops for annual and perennial flowers. Train grapes and kiwi up and over an arbor for shade, beauty and tasty fruit. Use strawberries as a groundcover in sunny locations. Create an impenetrable hedge with raspberries and a bit of shade with apples, pears, citrus, and other fruit trees.
