Creative Ways to Use Cacti and Succulents in the Landscape

It's all in the presentation. Using cacti and succulents in the garden or a container can add interest, form, color, and texture to your landscape.

Preserve your childhood memories by converting old toys to planters. Add drainage holes and a child size wheelbarrow and an old wagon make great planters.

Boots of all sizes can be made into planters. And those bright pink shoes may make the perfect garden accent.

Convert an old colander into a planter. Line it with permeable weed barrier, fill with a well-drained potting mix and plant. Mulch with gravel to create the perfect growing environment.

The form of the pencil cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli) and the bold leaves of Kalanchoe make nice additions to the planters on the deck.

In the garden the hens and chicks (Sempervivum tectorum) echo the moss and lines of color in this stone. And here the green variety spills out of an overturned blue pot.

A bit more information: Create the same impact indoors by growing cacti and succulents in unique planters. Shallow containers make great planters for a collection of small plants. Use large heavy planters to stabilize and create balance when growing tall mature plants. Make sure they have drainage holes and set upon a saucer to protect furniture and windowsills.
