Creative Plant Combinations
Increase your gardens bloom power and create year round interest with simple combinations and plant selections.
Mixing minor bulbs like grape hyacinths (Muscari) and larger bulbs like daffodils double the bloom power in small spaces.
Add a perennial to the mix like variegated Brunnera. The white flowers of the summer snowflake and daffodils echo the silver variegation on the leaves increasing the impact of the combination.
Color echoing also provides unity in the garden. Here shades of purple draw your eye to this colorful trio. The dark purple flowers of the iris are complemented by the neighboring rock cress (Aubrieta) and nearby creeping phlox (Phlox subulata).
Use trees and shrubs with year round appeal to expand your gardens appeal. The grisly bark of the paper bark maple. The twisted stems of Harry Lauders walking stick creates living art in the garden you can enjoy year round.
A bit more information: Look for opportunities to create eye-catching combinations each season. Look for perennials with outstanding flowers, fall color, and seed heads. Echo these outstanding features with colorful annuals as well as the flowers, fruit, fall color, and bark of nearby trees and shrubs.
