Affordable Landscape Makeover

Budget and time constraints prevent many of us from giving our landscape a facelift. And that's the case here. A young family with limited time uses the end of their driveway for a patio. They would like a quick fix to create an inviting space to relax, without investing a lot of money.

The first step was to soften the view of the neighbor's garage. We planted Shenandoah switchgrass and Helmond Red Pillar barberry, but make sure the barberry is not invasive in your area, in front of a willow screen to add a bit of privacy.

We covered the old cement drive with a piece of outdoor carpeting. This also helped define the space. We used a mix of containers to add planting space and create a cozy feel. This also added room for creating seasonal displays for a bit of variety throughout the year.

Now we've added a table and chairs we have improved the view and created a great space to relax.

A bit more information: Look for makeover treasures in your garage and area yard sales. Let friends and neighbors know about your makeover plans. They may just have the perfect item sitting in their basement waiting for a fresh coat of paint and a new home. Old window frames and doors make great dividers, seatless chairs are the perfect holder for containers and an old bike with a flower filled basket can make a nice focal point.
